Advanced Driving

If your drivers have taken and passed an advanced driving test, it may be possible to get better deals on car insurance. As our trainers at Defensive Driving UK have themselves taken and passed various advanced driving tests, we are able to train your drivers up to an advanced level of driving standard so that they can take one of the recognised advanced motoring examinations and become better drivers.

The two main advanced driving tests are conducted by IAM and RoSPA. Both tests are based on the Police "Roadcraft" system of car control and the examination for both lasts for approximately 90 minutes. The examiner will either be a serving or retired police officer, who himself holds the Police Advanced Driving Certificate, the highest standard that can be achieved.

The test route will be approximately 35 miles and will take place in a variety of road and traffic conditions, and where possible there will be a section of motorway driving included. Throughout the test the candidate should make safe progress within the posted speed limits and demonstrate a good sound knowledge of "Roadcraft" throughout the test. Also the candidate will have to perform a reverse into a side road and execute a hill start on an uphill gradient. Candidates will not fail for any minor faults but anything of a serious nature will result in a fail.

On passing the IAM test, the candidate will become a member of IAM and will receive a certificate and other benefits such as cheaper car insurance with participating car insurance companies and can take advantage of other special offers.

On passing the RoSPA test, the candidate will become a member of RoSPA and will receive a certificate and other benefits such as a magazine, cheaper car insurance with participating car insurance companies and can take advantage of other special offers. As long as the driver remains a member of RoSPA, members will get free re tests every 3 years.

What is advanced or defensive driving?

Advanced driving is about driving safely and taking observation, anticipation and planning skills to a higher level.

On the advanced driving course, your drivers will be assessed and developed to a higher standard following the "Roadcraft" system of car control. This is the same advanced driving technique that the police use and the purpose of this course is to raise general road awareness and planning skills. Furthermore, the driver will learn to take car control to a higher level and prepare them for an advanced driving test.

The following skills will be developed:
