Frequently asked questions

Here is a list of our frequently asked questions:

1. What is fleet training?
Fleet driver training is a defensive or advanced driving course aimed at the company vehicle driver and aims to improve your driver´s road awareness and planning skills, taking their driving to a more advanced level.
2. Some of my staff use their own cars for business. Do they still
    require training?
Some employers believe that by not supplying a company car and offering incentives to employees to use their own cars, that their health and safety responsibilities towards their employees are removed - this is not the case. If your staff are using their own car for business use and they haven´t told their insurance company then their insurance policy might be invalid.
3. How long do the courses run and how many drivers per trainer
    will there be?
The course duration and ratios are:
  • Half day 1 trainer to 1 driver
  • Full day 1 trainer to 1 or 2 drivers
  • 3 Day advanced driving course 1 trainer and up to 3 drivers
4. Where will the training be carried out from?
The training will be carried out either from your premises or at a mutually convenient location.
5. Who should attend a fleet driving course?
Our courses would benefit anyone who has to drive as part of their job. This could be the delivery driver, the area manager, sales consultants who have to travel to visit clients. It could even be the secretary who occasionally has to do a trip to the post office or bank etc.
6. What training vehicles will be used?
The training is usually carried out in your driver´s vehicle as this is what the driver is familiar with. The vehicle must be suitable, roadworthy, taxed, have an MOT if applicable and be fully insured. If a vehicle is not available then a training vehicle can be provided at an extra cost.
7. Who will deliver the training?
We have a network of trainers around the country who are all fully qualified DSA Approved Driving Instructors and Fleet Registered Trainers. To gain entry on to the fleet register driving instructors have to either pass further exams or successfully complete a course to deliver advanced driver training. Our trainers have themselves passed advanced driving tests and come from a variety of backgrounds including traffic policing and bus and lorry driving. All of our trainers are selected for their knowledge, experience and personality. Some have also worked as defensive driver trainers in the Middle East for the oil and gas industries where health and safety is absolutely vital.
8. What happens at the end of the course?
At the end of the course you will receive a written driving report which will highlight areas to consider for continued improvement and a certificate for your drivers.
If your drivers are participating in a full 3 day advanced driving test preparation course then the course will conclude with an advanced driving test.
9. What else do my drivers need?
All drivers must hold a valid current driving licence for the vehicle they will be driving and must be able to read a vehicle registration plate from a distance of 67 feet (20.5m) If glasses are required then they must be worn throughout the training. If drivers are on medication then this will be noted and the driver should check with their pharmacist as to whether it is safe to drive whilst taking the medication.
